The Ford Focus RS came back as a 2016 model year vehicle with an all-wheel drive system and with a powerful engine of Ford Mustang. With the lineup apparently complete, it seems the third-generation Focus is to continue unchanged for some years, but it seems that the American automaker has bigger plans for the compact in the form of another performance oriented version for the model year 2017. Although the Focus ST has been on the road testing, it differs greatly from the standard ST version.
The vehicle comes with an improved aerodynamic body and as the Focus ST has already seen a facelift, it is expected that Ford would introduce a more powerful version of ST to fill the gap between the top-line Ford RS and the standard Focus ST, which will probably be a sportier version of ST. As the Fiesta ST200 is already launched, the best chance goes to ST280, which will be launched as 2017 Ford Focus ST280.
2017 Ford Focus Changes, Exterior
The external styling of the new 2017 Focus ST280 will be much similar to that of the standard ST. It comes with a fresh aerodynamic kit, which includes a slim splitter at the base of the bumper and a duo of winglets at each corner in the front. The winglets are particularly attractive for a streetcar because these features are generally seen on rally-spec models. Except that, each body panel and external design element are similar to that of the standard ST.
At the back, the 2017 model comes equipped with a fresh roof spoiler and a redesigned bumper, but these rear features will most likely find their way on the new sedan at a later date. A suite of new lightweight alloy wheels that have an elite design, wearing a new set of front and back tires, would round off the external modifications.
Moreover, the 2017 Focus ST comes equipped with a stiffer suspension system with novel springs and shock absorbers n the front and at the back. Stopping power would come from larger brakes.
Although no authorized information about the 2017 Ford Focus ST280 interior design is available. However, it is expected that its cabin design will be the same as that of the standard ST. Nevertheless, there may be some aesthetic changes to validate the higher cost tag and make it a strong competitor to vie resourcefully with its only class rival, the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The new Focus comes with the same internal features as those of the ST200. These include the Charcoal leather upholstered Recaro seats, new badges, illuminated scuff plates, revamped door panels with rearranged drag handles and mirror controls. It is also expected that the center console of the vehicle would come imprinted with the ST280 logo.
2017 Ford Focus ST280 Engine, Specs, 0-60
The new Ford Focus ST280 2017 comes equipped with the same EcoBoost engine as that of the one used in the Focus ST. As a result, the new vehicle comes outfitted with a four-cylinder power plant with the displacement of 2.0 liters. However, it will be finely tuned to generate more power that the engine of the Focus ST. The engine now produces the utmost power of 276 ponies, which is 24 ponies more than that of the Focus ST and 74 ponies less than that of the Focus RS. The engine also generates the higher torque of 295 pounds per foot, which is 25 pounds per foot more than that of the earlier models.
The engine also offers enhanced acceleration to the new ST280 that assists it to attain the speed of 60 mph in 5.7 seconds from the start, which is 0.2 seconds slower than the standard ST. However, it gets the same maximum velocity of 154 mph.
The engine will be mated to the same six-velocity manual transmission as that of the ST. There is no optional gearbox.
Base cost and the date of release
The release date of 2017 Focus ST280 is expected to be late 2016. The base price will be placed between the ST and the RS models. It is expected to come with the starting price of $27,000, which is $5,000 more than that of the ST and $9,000 less than that of the RS.
